An emotional
experience on foot and by bike, visiting and becoming immersed in the
Franciscan world. The proposed itinerary is interwoven with the "La Via
Francigena di San Francesco" ,a trail that connects Tuscany,
Umbria and
Lazio in the name of Saint Francis.
This is a
truly fascinating journey offering a variety of components and rhythms: walking
, pedalling, plains, hills, mountains, sanctuaries, villages...discovering
places rich in history, atmosphere, spirituality and silence.
1Assisi-Spello on foot, 15
kms, a climb of 700mts (or easy route km 12, ascent 200m.)A " breathtaking " walk: not for the effort required, but for the splendid landscape and hidden jewels it offers. From Assisi we climb up to the isolated `Eremo delle Carceri, where Saint Francis spent much of his time in prayer, away from the material world. We then follow the trail across Mount Subasio through verdant woods and finish in Spello.
2Spello-Spoleto by
bike, 35 kms, no change in elevation, most of the trip follows
bike trails.
This leg of
the trip is extremely easy and crosses the Valley of Umbria,
following rivers and canals. Spoleto is reached quickly as we take the cycle
paths, meandering past ancient farmhouses, stables and through fields. Pick up bikes in Spello and return them in Spoleto.
3 Spoleto- Ceselli on foot, 16 kms, a
climb of 500mts
Another day
on foot, with the Franciscan Sanctuary of Monteluco as our destination. We are
walking through a sacred forest that has been preserved and protected since
ancient times.
4Ceselli -Piediluco by bike, 30
kms, no change in elevation
Today we travel by bike,
across flat country, following the banks of the river Nera, towards Piediluco National park. A not-to-be-missed visit
to the Cascata delle Marmore and a ride around Piediluco lake.
5Piediluco-Rieti
by bike, an almost completely flat
road,28 kms ,a climb
of 200mts.
Still on
bikes, we cycle through tranquil countryside towards Rieti. A visit to the
Franciscan Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone is highly recommended. This deviation
involves a climb, but may be avoided by taking the comfort of a bus!
Meet the
tour organisers at Rieti, return bikes.
The
